Easy DIY Pom Pom Pillow
I was browsing through my Instagram feed the other day when I came across a post from one of my favorite interior design firms Leclair Decor. I instantly fell in love with the pom pom pillow on the sectional, I just HAD to have it! Unfortunately I wasn’t in love with the $189 price tag. So what does a DIY enthusiast like myself do? I figure out how to make my own!
Here’s a close up of the original pom pom pillow:
And here is how my DIY pom pom pillow turned out:
What You’ll Need:
- A throw pillow
- 13 pom poms
- A needle and thread
I lucked out on this DIY project because I already had the perfect pillow to embellish. I knew right away that I wanted to use black pom poms for this pillow. I’ve been having a bit of fun adding black accents into my decor lately. My apartment needed a bit of drama! I just bought this Orbit mirror for my front entry, and I think the black pom pom pillow complements it well.
How I Did it:
Making the pom poms was so easy, but you can purchase pre-made pom poms at most craft stores. I sourced the yarn from a local dollar store for a whopping $3 (a steal compared to the original $189 pillow). After you’ve made the pom poms, simply sew them on using a needle and thread. All in all this DIY pom pom pillow took me an hour to complete and cost me $3. It might not be as high quality as the original, but at a fraction of the cost it makes me one happy DIY’er.
There are many ways to make a yarn pom pom. The easiest way for me is to simply loop the yarn around my hand around 25 times. Cut the yarn, leaving a string around 10″ long. Gently pull the yarn off your hand and tightly wrap the 10″ string around the center. Tie the two ends of string together tightly, creating several knots. The yarn will now be in a bow shape. Cut all 25 loops on each end of the bow, and fluff up your pom pom. Trim to shape if needed.
Once you have 13 pom poms its time to start sewing. A very simple needle and string pierced strait through the middle of the pom pom is all you’ll need to secure it in place. I copied the exact pattern of the original pillow, but feel free to make your own!
I’m really happy with how this pillow turned out. I think it adds a fun mix of texture and pattern to my living room, fitting in perfectly with my modern boho style.
